Secondary forests in Singapore are extremely valuable. In this article published by The Edge Singapore, Prof Zhang Weina from the Department of Finance and Deputy Director of SGFIN, and SGFIN Research Associate Jefferson conducted a comprehensive impact valuation, counting its monetary benefits from cleaner air, flood buffering, health and mental benefits for humans, biodiversity, and carbon storage and sequestration. Such a valuation complements conventional land-use assessments by explicitly valuing intangible benefits typically unaccounted for in financial planning. A 10-hectare forest in Singapore can have an integrated value of S$127 million.
