This course provides participants with a clear understanding of the principles and practices involved in evaluating and financing sustainable projects - the integration of economic, social, and environmental considerations in project financing.  By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to participate and contribute to sustainable development initiatives, make informed decisions in project financing, and foster long-term sustainability for businesses, organizations, and the society.

This course, qualifies as part of a three-course requirement for the award of a NUS Professional Certificate in Managing Sustainability. The other two courses of the requirement for the certificate are Carbon Accounting for Enterprises and Sustainability Reporting and Governance.

The course also qualifies as part of a three-course requirement for the award of a NUS Professional Certificate in Financing Sustainability. The other two courses of the requirement for the certificate are Financial Valuation of Social and Environment Impact, and Social and Sustainable Investing.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

This course is relevant for professionals who are driving sustainability transformation for their organizations or are looking to upskill and accelerate their career in the sustainability space. These typically include Chief Financial Officers, Chief Sustainability Officers, entrepreneurs, business and organizational leaders, product managers, project developers, sustainability professionals, public policy makers and consultants. In addition, as sustainability is increasingly incorporated in mainstream financial and investment practices, this course will be useful for audit and compliance officers, financial accountants, financial analysts, business analysts, risk management officers, relationship managers, and loan officers.

Our participants will learn essential concepts and tools to become better equipped in helping their companies identify the core areas to focus their efforts on in their sustainability journeys.

PRE-REQUISITES:

Basic understanding of financial concepts, as well as how companies operate within a competitive environment.

  • Participants are strongly advised to apply at least 1 month in advance. Applications received after the deadline will be considered based on space availability.
  • Participants who attend all classes and pass assessment of the course will be awarded a Certificate.

Associate Professor Ruth Tan

NUS Business School, Department of Finance

Dr Ruth Tan is Associate Professor of Finance at the NUS Business School, National University of Singapore. She is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants (ICPAS) and a Fellow of CPA Australia. She has received several teaching excellence awards at NUS. She is currently a Fellow at the NUS Teaching Academy. She has co-authored several books: “Household Finance” published in 2020; “Fundamentals of Corporate Finance” published in 2016; and “Corporate Finance” published in 2014.

She has also co-authored numerous business cases which are available on Ivey and HBR. She teaches Corporate Finance for the Masters in Business Administration (MBA), the Masters in Sustainable and Green Finance (SGFIN), and the Masters in Economics. She has supervised a Capstone Project under SGFIN for SMBC on the topic of “Divesting Strategy for Coal Exposure”. She is also the overall supervising professor for the Enterprise 50 Educational Project since 2010. Under this project, students work with the top 50 SMEs in Singapore. She has conducted in-house executive training for various companies such as Ikea, Mitsui, Kalbe, Bridgestone, Cerebos, NKSJ Holdings and AGC. She is currently the co-director of the executive program, Accounting and Finance for non-financial managers.

Associate Professor Zhang Weina

NUS Business School, Department of Finance
Sustainable and Green Finance Institute

Associate Professor Zhang Weina is with the Department of Finance at National University of Singapore (NUS) Business School. She is also the Academic Director of MSc in Sustainable and Green Finance Programme and the Deputy Director of Sustainable and Green Finance Institute (SGFIN) at NUS. She obtained her Master of Science and Ph.D. in Finance from Kellogg School of Management at the Northwestern University, USA.

Weina’s current research and teaching focus on sustainable and green finance, fixed income securities, asset pricing and investment. She examines how ESG are priced in financial securities. She also explores the informational efficiency in various financial markets and the impact of different policies on financial instruments. She currently teaches courses such as Sustainability and Finance, Sustainable and Green Investment at the master's and undergraduate's levels. She also teaches lifelong learning modules and conducts executive trainings in the related areas.

Weina has published dozens of academic papers including Management Science and Review of Finance. She has also published more than 30 business cases with IVEY. Her papers have received several best paper awards and she is also a recipient of many teaching excellence awards both at the NUS Business School and the University levels.
